The Glenbarrow and Ridge of Cappard Hike

The majestic Barrow river, which flows to the sea at Waterford, rises here as a small fast flowing stream but its history can be seen in the deep ravine like valleys that it has forged since the end of the last ice age in Ireland. The hike slowly opens out into vistas over the Irish midland plains and on a clear day you really can seem to see forever. We pass pre-famine mills and the remains of a village which was still a thriving small community until the late 1960’s. This is not an overly taxing walk, with easy climbs and a relatively short accent to the Stoney Man cairn for those long views into the horizon.
